Professional Skipper Magazine

Published by VIP Publications Limited, by mariners for mariners, Professional Skipper magazine is widely recognised as the leading marine professional trade of its type in Oceania. Professional Skipper now in its 12th year, remains the flagship title for its publishers who also publish new zealand aquaculture, New Zealand Workboats Review, Aquaculture Health International and Oceans.

The magazine is published six times a year and is circulated by direct mail to port companies, owners and operators of commercial vessels including coastal shipping, tugs and barges, passenger ferries, tourists and sport fishing craft as well as commercial fishing vessels and the boat and ship building industry.

As a professional marine publication the magazine also finds favour with many recreational skippers who are professional in the way they carry out their boating activities and are looking for this type of information. It is available by direct mail on subscription and public sales from leading bookshops and retailers of marine publications.

While it could be said that the magazine is too wordy with its pages crammed to the gunwales. This is due to the nature of the beast as it contains a wide range of information, ranging from waterfront business to summaries of maritime accident reports, the latest in work boats, plus a little light easy reading. It is not and does not purport to be a boating magazine.

The magazine is stand-alone. It receives no additional industry funding other than its advertising and sales. To ensure the quality of content is not diminished or over shadowed by advertising, we have endeavoured to produce the magazine at 40% advertising content. This inturn creates a need for strict budgets, which places pressure on our designer who must balance commercial advertising with editorial content, versus design and layout to ensure our readers can remain confident in getting value for money from their trade publication.

The Editor Keith Ingram is a professional mariner who has spent some 40 years in the maritime industry and has a unique understanding of industry issues and a wealth of experience to draw on. It is this no nonsense, factual approach to reporting that has given the magazine its recognition and creditability that our readers have come to rely on.
