Boating New Zealand.

The Auckland International Boat Show, just over a month away, will be the centre of New Zealand’s biggest boating event since the America’s Cup when it opens in the Viaduct Harbour from 11 to 14 March.

Boat show organiser, the Marine Industry Association, expects a sell-out of exhibitor space on land, and a packed display of new boats on the water. The floating exhibition will sport a new layout to accommodate the America’s Cup class yachts competing in the Louis Vuitton regatta and their entourage – an active, bonus display in the Viaduct Harbour, from 9 – 21 March.

In a buy one, get one free deal, all boat show ticket holders will include a free ticket to Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum’s newly opened exhibit, Blue Water Black Magic – A Tribute to Sir Peter Blake with any other ticket to the Museum purchased.

Making its debut outside of Japan, the 28ft Toyota Ponam with New Zealand-built, aluminium hull, fibreglass top and twin Toyota inboard engines is fully spec’d with full electronics and a comfortable interior.

Riviera will display what may be the show’s largest boat: the new Riviera Flybridge 70 which will be driven over from Australia via Lord Howe Island in February. Priced at more than NZ$6million before options are added, it features al fresco dining with seating for eight, aft; four staterooms and four bathrooms; large lounge and dining, and an inviting galley fully equipped with Miele appliances. The master cabin takes the full beam, aft, while the VIP cabin is for’ard with a queen-size berth. The motoryacht’s twin 1825hp Caterpillars give her a top speed of more than 32 knots. The spacious flybridge and saloon are linked by an internal staircase. She has hydraulic bow thrusters and stern thrusters.

Riviera will also display its biggest sportsyacht, the 5800, which features triple IPS 600hp drives, European styling, full-beam master cabin and two bathrooms; and its mid-range, IPS-driven, 44 sportsyacht, with two cabins and en suites – described by Riviera as “a lot of bang for your buck”.

Smart Marine will include new product ranges including heavy duty, welded construction fenders; inflatable lifejackets with quick release belt, cellphone pocket and external reflectors; and a new range of inflatable boats built to ISO9002 standards.

Johnson Yachts International will exhibit its 17m Carter/Johnson launch powered by twin Volvo IPS 600 diesel drive units for superior manoeuvrability and economy. The boat cruises at 20 knots – ideal for weekend getaways. A customised interior is available.

Calibre Sails of Whangarei will be at the show, bringing their 30 years experience to the cruising and racing market, from their committed team of sailmakers.

Also from Whangarei, Norsand Boatyard provides a haulout, hardstand, repair and refit yard which specialises in traditional and modern craft. It repairs all building materials, interiors and exteriors and mechanical and electrical services.

Lenter Marketing will introduce the space-saving, height-adjustable, swivel table frame suitable for cabin and cockpit, thanks to an unobtrusive mounting plate.

New Zealand's biggest maritime event since the America's Cup.

New Zealand's biggest maritime event since the America's Cup The Louis Vuitton Trophy Series' first round robin will kick off in Auckland on the preview day of the Auckland International Boat Show, making it the biggest maritime event in New Zealand since the America's Cup

Peter Busfield, executive director of the show's organiser, the Marine Industry Association, says the presence of the Louis Vuitton racing yachts, their crews, support boats, patrol boats and visiting superyachts in the Viaduct Harbour, alongside the show, adds a whole new dimension.

"At four o'clock every day, the best sailors in the world - the likes of the Dean Barkers and Paul Cayards etc - will step off their boats outside the Louis Vuitton media centre near Simunovich Fisheries. After the press conference, they will walk right through the show to their bases where the boats are being hauled out.”

To make room for the Louis Vuitton entourage of boats and to avoid disrupting the charter boats during a busy time, the temporary marina for the boat show will move to the western side of the Viaduct Harbour.

It is expected that 10 countries will compete in the regatta; all will sail in the first round robin, which runs for the duration of the boat show. Teams will gradually be eliminated through the semi-finals and finals in the week following. The Louis Vuitton will bring the world's boating media to Auckland, giving exhibitors a fantastic opportunity to promote their products and boats.

A major development at Auckland International Boat Show 2010 is the new Pacific Blue Destination Hall. On the Thursday and Friday, this will host 10 groups of 24 school children, aged 10 to 12, who have been invited to the show through the Waterwise programme. They will enjoy a Watersafe Auckland programme of reach-and-throw rescues, the use of lifejackets and even a competition in rigging Optimists and knot-tying. A highlight will be match racing with the New Zealand Remote Yacht Association.

They will also visit the new displays at the Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum. Peter Busfield says the aim is to introduce and educate the next generation into water activities and build their awareness of opportunities and environmental and safety issues. One side of the Pacific Blue Destination Hall will promote careers in the marine industry, including stands for the Boating Industry Training Organisation and Discover Boating.

The other side will feature destination activities such as charter boats, waterborne activities and destination representatives.

High-profile boats at the show will include Simon Hull's giant, high-performance, ocean-racing trimaran, G3, the Salthouse Corsair built by Dean Salthouse Next Generation Boats - a luxurious interior combined with one of the most proven launch designs tested over three decades around New Zealand's rugged coastline. New model releases from Riveria and others will also be a feature at the show.

Tim Porter, general manager of Boating New Zealand, is proud to clock up a dozen years as major sponsor of the Auckland International Boat Show. "The Auckland International Boat Show is the major show in New Zealand, easily comparable with Sanctuary Cove and Sydney Boat Shows - it's fantastic to see how far it's come in just 12 years, and it can only get better.”

DECEMBER 3RD 2009

New destinations at Auckland International Boat Show.

The 2010 Auckland International Boat Show will fly even higher, thanks to new, major sponsor Pacific Blue which will bring international media to New Zealand’s premier boat show. The show also welcomes new sponsor Panasonic TOUGHBOOK.

Peter Busfield, executive director of the Marine Industry Association which organises the show, welcomes the high calibre of sponsors.

“Every year, the boat show makes major steps forward on previous years, in quality of displays, media profile and entertainment,” he says. “As it attracts bigger sponsors, we are able to provide even better service to our exhibitors and visitors to the Auckland International Boat Show.”

The show, organised by the Marine Industry Association from 11 to 14 March next year, will feature new motor yachts and sailboats from the local market and overseas, the latest in trailer powerboats and specialist aluminium fishing boats, beautifully restored classic yachts and launches, latest products in electronics, engines, marine accessories and boating systems, and an even higher level of interactive displays. These will include Coastguard’s boat-handling opportunities with a qualified instructor.

The new Pacific Blue Destination Hall will help boaters of all levels get more fun from their boating time. Friendly, informed enthusiasts will share information on cruising, fishing, sailing and other waterborne thrills in local waters, or – for those seeking overseas adventures – on sailing holidays, resorts and flotilla cruising in Australia and the South Pacific. One lucky family will win the show’s gate prize, a yacht charter in Tonga with The Moorings, including flights for two.

Discover Boating, the MIA’s new initiative to encourage landlubbers into boating – see www.discoverboating.co.nz – will feature prominently in the Pacific Blue Destination Hall while Water Safety New Zealand will run a programme on marine life, safety and environmental issues, aimed at 8-12 year olds. MIA executive officer Peter Busfield says the MIA is inviting schools to attend four-hour, interactive sessions at the show. “The aim is to introduce and educate the next generation into water activities and build their awareness of opportunities and environmental and safety issues,” he says.

The Cruising and Safety Hall, an extremely popular addition to last year’s show, will return with seminars on topics such as weather, rescue, kayaking, learning to love your diesel engine and passage planning.

The new boats will include a sailing catamaran from the Robertson and Caine range, the Leopard 38 – badged as a Sunsail 384 – which offers the latest in performance, comfort and an abundance of outdoor space for tropical cruising.

The Auckland International Boat Show will see TransDiesel Ltd exhibiting as the new Kohler Power Systems dealer for New Zealand and the South Pacific. Kohler Power Systems manufactures a range of diesel-powered marine generator sets, spanning 3.5kW to 500kW and suitable for the marine commercial market. Options include extension for commercial operators to the standard 12-month warranty. Kohler recently acquired Lombardini S.R.L.

ENL will display the new Furuno 1835, 1935 and 1945 radar series. These feature ingenious new software that provides super-high resolution imagery, quick user interface and improved display of data, including AIS and ARPA (auto radar plotting aid) targets.

Peter Montgomery will reign on the air waves as the voice of the show.

Get on the water

"Get on the water" will be the message from the new Cruising and Safety Hall at the Auckland International Boat Show 2009. Whether planning fishing trips in Queenstown or a cruise to the Pacific Islands, visitors to the hall will find the information they need to stay safe and within the rules.

Confirmed exhibitors in the Cruising and Safety Hall are Coastguard Education, Maritime New Zealand, Line 7, regional councils, Hutchwilco, Yacht Lifeline, Whiting Power Systems and Island Cruising Association. As well as their exhibit stands, they will present free, 30-minute seminars throughout the show.

The Coastguard's seminar will discuss safety equipment, weather forecasts and boat handling through multi media presentations.

Whiting Power Systems will demonstrate basic engine checks to be carried out before leaving port.

The harbour master's representatives will discuss local environments for boaties and various by-laws in specific cruising areas. For example, many boaties are unaware that Coromandel has different by-laws from Auckland.

Line 7 will show technical and lifestyle clothing suitable for boating.

Many of the seminars will be complemented by on-water activities such as PWC manoeuvres, powerboat handling, liferaft demonstrations and kayaking skills.

The Cruising and Safety Hall will be in Pavillion 7, in the old Team New Zealand base. It is envisaged seminars will run from 10.30am to 4.30pm daily... The boat show programme will list the seminar timetable.
